ASAM Continuum is a cutting-edge electronic tool designed for healthcare professionals. It uses a sophisticated system to evaluate individuals dealing with substance use disorders and related conditions. The ASAM 3rd Edition Continuum assessments are now available for completion directly in the Kipu EMR. This integration means clinicians can access top-notch clinical decision support without needing to access a separate system.
Kipu's ASAM integration includes two key assessments:
- Comprehensive Continuum Assessment: This deep dive helps you pinpoint the right care level by evaluating six crucial areas, from withdrawal potential to the patient's living environment. (All six dimensions are: Acute intoxication and/or withdrawal potential; Biomedical conditions and complication; Emotional, behavioral, or cognitive conditions and complications; Readiness to change; Relapse, continued use or continued problem potential; and Recovering/living environment.
- Triage Assessment: A quick evaluation tool providing immediate care-level recommendations, ensuring rapid response when time is of the essence.
Administering the ASAM Continuum Assessments
Let's review how to view and administer the ASAM Continuum comprehensive or triage assessment. Users who have been assigned the Comprehensive Interviewer license can fill out comprehensive assessments and users who have been assigned the Co-Triage Interviewer license can create and fill out triage assessments. If you need to create and fill out both assessment types, you will need both licenses assigned.
- From the patient chart, click on the ASAM Continuum logo.
- A modal will display, showing all previously added assessments for each episode of care or all episodes of care.
- You can adjust the episode of care using the related drop-down.
- The table displays the following information:
- Assessment: Shows whether it is a comprehensive or a triage assessment.
- Interviewer: Displays the name of the individual who added the assessment.
- Created Date/Completed Date: The date and time the assessment was created and completed.
- Status: Shows whether the assessment is in progress or completed.
- Actions: Resume incomplete assessments or, for completed assessments, download assessment PDFs, open assessments in ASAM, or view the level of care.
- Click the New Assessment icon and select the desired assessment type. Users will only see the assessment type that they have been licensed for.
- If you have previously completed this assessment, you have the option to import data from the previous assessment.
- Next, complete the assessment.
- Once you click Submit, you will be able to download the PDF results and view the recommended level of care.
- The Final Scoring section will display the provisional level of care, sublevel of care, and any critical items.
Important: Information does not import into any other EMR forms (e.g., you can't populate your biopsychosocial with the data input in the ASAM assessment). Additionally, these assessments cannot be sent to the patient portal.
