Once results are released by the lab they will import into the Kipu EMR within a few minutes. Results are automatically matched to the patient chart using demographic information. However, sometimes results fail to match a patient.
Let's review the Lab Reports section, how to match unassigned results, and view lab results on the patient chart.
Lab Reports Tab
To see all results, open the Labs tab and click Lab Reports.
This tab contains all results sent to Kipu from the lab. Results will display in a list layout with a current status indicator.
Lab Reports Statuses
-
Assigned: The result was assigned to the patient's chart and is pending physician signature/review. Click here for instructions on signing results.
-
Reviewed: The result was assigned to the patient's chart and has been signed/reviewed by the physician.
-
Unassigned: The result did not automatically match to an existing patient chart and must be assigned to the patient manually.
Viewing Lab Results
To open a result sent from the lab, click on the patient's name or on the Specimen ID.
Because the results are displayed in Kipu exactly as they are sent to the lab (Kipu does not interpret or modify result information), any questions you have about the lab data should be directed to your lab contact.
Lab Reports Actions
From the lab report details view, you can take the following actions:
- Delete: After a result is deleted it cannot be restored by the facility. Deleting results should only be used as a last resort (this will only be visible if the result is not assigned to a patient).
- View Test Requisition: Use this option to view the most recent test requisition in the Lab Test Requisitions tab.
- Assign/Unassign: Use this option to assign an Unassigned result to a patient (this will only be visible if the result is not assigned to a patient, otherwise the button will say Unassign).
- Download: View Attached PDF Results. This is only visible for results assigned to a patient and when the lab has attached a PDF
Important: You may encounter unassigned lab reports. Click here for instructions on assigning these lab reports to their correct patients.
Lab Result History
The lab result history section displays the patient history for each substance/criteria that they have been tested for.
Navigate to the Patient chart > Lab Results > Test results history.
View Lab Results on the Patient Chart
When the information has been sent to Kipu correctly, the patient's result will automatically be assigned to the patient's chart. To view the results, open the patient chart and click on the Lab Results tab.
Result Example
To open a result that was sent from the lab, click on the Specimen ID. If the lab has attached a PDF version of the result, click the Download button to view the PDF version of the result.
Abnormal results are highlighted in red for easier review and include reference ranges and any comments the lab includes. The results are displayed exactly as reported by the lab. If you have questions about the test and/or results, please contact the lab for more information.
At the bottom of the result, there is an Annotate button. Use this button to leave comments on this result. These comments are for facility documentation only, the lab will not have access to these comments.
