Lab orders are a test plan requested by the physician, indicating what the patient should be tested for, when the patient should be tested, how long this testing plan should be in place, and the medical necessity for the testing.
Required for Testing: Please note that labs require the patient to have a Diagnosis Code in order to process the specimen.
Creating Lab Orders
Lab orders are created in an admitted patient's chart from the Lab Orders tab.
-
To begin, navigate to the patient's chart.
-
From the patient chart, click on the Lab Orders tab. This tab is where all patient's lab orders will live, and where you will add new, or discontinue existing, orders.
Note: This tab can be renamed according to organization preference, so it may be called something else in your environment. Look for a tab with the flask icon.
-
To create a new order, click Create.
Important: If you do not see the Create button, follow the troubleshooting steps from this article.
- Select the name of the ordering physician from the drop-down. The physician selected must be the physician on record with the lab and their NPI must be included in their Kipu User Profile.
- Use the Via drop-down to indicate how the order was requested.
- Click the Available Tests field and use the drop-down to add in as many custom profiles (created by your organization), standard profiles (offered by the lab), and individual tests as necessary.
- After adding your test(s), click Add.
- The selected tests are added to the Ordered Tests section below, where they can be further customized.
- Click Start Date to set the date. This field defaults to today's date.
- Click on the drop-down in the Frequency field to choose the desired frequency. The options in this field can be created/modified by Super Admins under Settings > Orders.
