Lab Orders are a test plan requested by the physician, indicating what the patient should be tested for, when the patient should be tested, how long this testing plan should be in place, and the medical necessity for the testing.
Required for testing: Please note that labs require the patient to have a Diagnosis Code in order to process the specimen.

Creating a Lab Order Instructions
Lab Orders are created within the patient chart from the Lab Orders tab, and the patient must already be admitted before you can create a lab order.
Because this tab can be renamed according to organization preference, this tab may be called something else in your environment. Look for a tab with the flask icon that looks like the screenshots below.
- From the patient chart, click on the Lab Orders tab.
- The Lab Orders tab is where all the patient's lab orders will live. From this tab, you can add new orders or discontinue existing orders.
- To create a new order, click Create.
- Select the Ordering Physician. The prescribing physician selected must be the Physician on record with the lab and their NPI must be included on their Kipu User Profile.
- Use the Via drop-down to indicate how the order was requested. If you'd like to update these options, please review the Doctor's Orders "Via" Options setting.
- Click into the Available Tests section. This drop-down allows you to add any Custom Profiles created by your organization, Standard Profiles offered by the lab, and individual tests.
- You can include as many tests and/or profiles as needed. Once you are finished adding tests, click Add.
- This adds the selected tests to the Ordered Tests test section below where they can be further customized.
- Select the Start date. This defaults to today's date.
- Select Frequency. These can be created/modified by Super Admins in the Orders tab.
- Select Duration of the order.
- Select On Admission and/or On Discharge as appropriate.
- Use the buttons to select the relevant Statement of Medical Necessity options that apply to this order. The statement can be edited in the box below as needed. To add, update, or disable a statement, Super Admins can follow these instructions.
