Gender Identity

  • Updated

Gender Identity functionality allows you to record both the patients' birth gender and their gender identity.

Kipu has the following Gender Identities:

  • Birth Gender
  • Transgender - Male to Female
  • Transgender - Female to Male
  • Non Binary
  • Other
  • Don't Know / Not Sure
  • Didn't Answer

Enable Gender Identity

Super Admins can enable this feature in your Instance Settings.

  1. Click on your initials and select Settings.
  2. Open the Instance tab.mceclip2.png
  3. From the Patient Options section, check Use Gender and Use gender identity. mceclip0.png

Select Gender Identity in Chart

Once enabled, use the Gender Identity drop-down to select the patient's gender identity from the facesheet. Any EMR user who can modify or create the charts will be able to update a patient's gender identity as necessary.

The patient header will show the gender symbol(s): birth sex is the first symbol and gender identity is listed second (if added to the chart):

The symbols are also used for occupancy bed board, group sessions, rounds.

Moreover, gender identity is one of the report's data points which means you can include the patient's gender identity in your reporting.

Gender Identity Rules

Gender restricted items in Kipu behave the following way for the patients with non-birth sex identities: Birth gender, Didn't answer, Don't Know, Non-Binary, Other follow birth sex for gender-specific items; Transgender identities follow their "new" gender.

  • Consents with Show if Male Only and Show if Female Only rules
  • Evaluations items with Show if Male Only and Show if Female Only rules
  • Female Only and Male Only Group sessions
  • Female Only and Male Only Rooms
  • Female Only and Male Only Rounds

In addition, for both Transgender identities the following are shown:

  • Consents with Show if Transgender rule
  • Evaluations items with Show if Transgender rule

All standard or non-gender specific items are shows to all patients disregarding their identity.
