Patient Inventory: Importance of Refills

  • Updated

Refills are a vital part of the patient medication inventory. Refills allow users to add additional medication quantity to the patient's inventory to be dispensed via the Med Log.

When you have used all available Refills but need to continue dispensing the medication from the patient inventory, create a new inventory log for the order by unlinking it from the empty inventory log or discontinue the existing doctor's order and create a new one.

To avoid that, make sure you are always adding the necessary number of Refills for your doctor's order and when logging new medication in the inventory.

For medication orders without Refills, as soon as you run out of the patient's inventory for the linked medication, you won't be able to refill it. Once the last pill/item is dispensed, the Add Transaction button will disappear from the inventory medication details.

In order to create a new Patient Inventory log, you will need to either

  • Navigate to patient's inventory > open empty medication > click on Link Orders > uncheck your order > Submit, and then create a brand new inventory log for this order.
  • Or re-create a doctor's order with refills (discontinue existing one and add a new one) and create a new inventory log for a new order.

If you do not want to use Refills for the open-ended doctor's orders and you prefer not to unlink or discontinue the order every time you run out of the medication, you can add an Add (or Refill) transaction to the patient's inventory before the medication is finished. For convenience purposes, we recommend always using Refills for the medications.
