Issue
I need to be able to put in an order for a medication where the patient can take different doses (e.g., 1 or 2 tablets). How do I get that to show up correctly in the order?
Environment
Kipu EMR, Roles: Doctor, Nurse, Super Admin, & Records Admin, Chart: Doctor's Orders Tab, Medications: Custom Orders, Medications: Quick Orders
Resolution
To allow for multiple types of doses to be charted in the Med Log, you will need to create a separate order for each possible dose.
Important: If you are using eRx you must use the Medication drop-down to create the orders and only use the supplied drop-downs or the order will not be recognized by the eRx Database and you will get an error. This is why you will need to do an order for each option the patient has for the medication's dose.
When adding as a Custom Order follow the below steps.
- On the patient's chart go to the Doctors Orders tab (this can be labeled differently for each facility).
- Click the Custom Order button.
- Within the pop-up, enter the order for the first possible dose.
- Click the Add Medication.
- Enter the order for the next possible dose.
-
Note: If you have an existing order, and create a second order for the new dose, you will see an error for the previous dose you entered. This is just a warning, you can proceed adding in the second dose amount.
- Now when tracking the medication within the Med Log/MARS you will be able to mark the dose that was given and decline the dose that was not. This allows you to track inventory and doses given correctly.
-
Important: Make sure that if you are using the Inventory feature to attach both orders to the same inventory so they both pull correctly.
